3 Possible Causes of Poor Water Pressure in the Shower

Low water pressure at home can be the worst, especially in the shower. It can make what should be a relaxing experience less enjoyable and take much longer. If a household has poor shower water pressure, there are several possible reasons it may be happening. Plumbers can find and fix what is causing the low water pressure. But if it only occurs with one showerhead, homeowners may be able to fix it themselves.

It Might Be the Water Heater

One of the ways to narrow down possible causes of poor shower water pressure is to determine whether the problem is temperature-specific. If low hot water pressure is the issue and cold water pressure is perfectly normal, there could be a problem with the water heater or hot water lines.

Several things can cause hot water pressure problems. One is the possibility of hard water minerals and sediment causing blockages, which can be resolved by flushing the system. Another possibility is a malfunctioning pressure valve, which can be fixed by resetting the valve or replacing it if necessary. A final issue could be that the water heater has already exceeded its maximum life expectancy and would need to be replaced.

Leaks or Clogs in Water Lines

When figuring out the root cause of poor water pressure, it’s also important to determine whether the whole house is affected or if low water pressure is specific to a fixture or an area. If all or many of the fixtures inside the house experience a reduction in water pressure, then there may be a leak or a clog within the pipes affecting the water pressure.

Either way, a plumber can locate and repair leaks that are letting water escape before reaching the fixtures or clean out clogged pipes to remove whatever is blocking water flow in the line. This should help restore good water pressure back to the home’s plumbing fixtures.

It Might Be the Showerhead

If only a specific fixture, like one showerhead, is affected by poor water pressure, the problem could be with the showerhead itself. Showerhead nozzles have many tiny holes through which water flows to create a pleasant and relaxing stream, but they could be clogged, creating low water pressure.

The small holes can become clogged with mineral and scale buildup, more commonly with hard water, reducing the water pressure from the showerhead. In some cases, restoring a showerhead to its previous glory is as simple as cleaning it. But it may be time to consider a showerhead replacement if cleaning and unclogging it doesn’t do the trick or if it’s older.
